The 96th Fighter-Bomber Aviation Regiment (Serbo-Croatian: 96. lovačko-bombarderski avijacijski puk / 96. ловачко-бомбардерски авијацијски пук) was an aviation regiment established in 1944 as 423rd Assault Aviation Regiment (Serbo-Croatian: 423. vazduhoplovni jurišni puk / 423. ваздухопловни јуришни пук) formed from Yugoslav partisan aviators, trained and equipped by Soviet Air Force.

History

423rd Assault Aviation Regiment

The 423rd Assault Aviation Regiment was established on December 9, 1944, in Ruma, from Yugoslav partisan aviators with the Soviet Air Force 17th Air Army's 167th Guards Assault Aviation Regiment (167.GShAP). It has become independent form Soviet command and personal since May 1945. Regiment was part of 42nd Aviation Assault Division, it was equipped with Soviet Il-2 Shturmovik ground-attack aircraft. Regiment has took part in final operations for liberation of Yugoslavia. During the combat operations it was based at Ruma, Gospođinci, Bački Brestovac, Ilinovac, Velika Gorica/Pleso and Ljubljana airfields.

After the war regiment has moved to Pleso.

By the 1948 year this regiment was renamed like all other units of Yugoslav Army, so it has become 96th Assault Aviation Regiment.

The commanders of regiment in this period were Milan Malnarić, Milan Marjanović, Blažo Kovačević, Aleksandar Radičević, Vlado Bakarić, Ilija Zelenika, Luka Popov and Luka Stojanović-Muratov.

96th Assault and Fighter-Bomber Aviation Regiment

The 96th Assault Aviation Regiment was formed by renaming of 423rd Assault Aviation Regiment at Pleso airport as part of 37th Aviation Division. By 1949 regiment has moved to Lučko airfield near Zagreb, and in year 1952 it has finally relocated to Cerklje airfield, where it has remain until it was disbanded. In 1954 Soviet-made Il-2 ground-attack aircraft were replaced with US-build F-47D Thunderbolt fighters. In that period regiment was renamed to 96th Fighter-Bomber Aviation Regiment (Serbo-Croatian: 96. lovačko-bombarderski avijacijski puk / 96. ловачко-бомбардерски авијацијски пук).

It was disbanded by order from October 22, 1959.

The commanders of regiment in this period were Luka Stojanović-Muratov, Drago Laušević, Borivoje Tošić, Milan Aćimović, Nikola Vučević, Teodor Majev, and Dragoljub Zvicer.
